Unfortunately, the employees will probably be the last to know...and they won't know until they get their pink slips!

RE: filling up with water

I don't know in what state these places are.
I'm assuming California...I know there is a Red Rock Canyon State Park in that state. I don't recognize the other two places (the only El Mirage I know of is the town in the Phoenix Metropolitan area, and it certainly doesn't require doing uphill to get to!).

RE: Advice about changing res to S dakota

The difference between SD and TX. No vehicle inspections,
But you don't have to return to Texas each year just to have your vehicle(s) inspected.
lower registration and insurance costs,
I don't remember what we paid in vehicle registration fees in Texas, but it seems to me that the difference between the two states (at least in our situation) didn't amount to much of a difference. However, our fulltimers and auto insurance DID go down when we made the move from Texas to South Dakota.
and 3% sales tax as opposed to over 8% sales tax.
Texas' sales tax when registering a new vehicle is only 6.25%, not 8%.

RE: Advice about changing res to S dakota

In a very rare case I have had a problem with the zip code of 57106 as the retailer or his credit card service did not reconize that zip as a Minnehaha County zip:?
I have had some websites ask which county the 57106 zip code is in...Minnehaha or Turner (I think...at least one of the counties which borders on Minnehaha), but I've never had anyone outright reject the zip code.

RE: vehicle registration costs by state

You did not say if you are a full time resident of Colorado or are you going to be a full time RVer and will be traveling to various places.
This is a very important point. If the former is the case, you need to register your RV in Colorado. If the latter, then, as others have stated, there are lots of other things to look at than just registration fees.
South Dakota, Texas, and Florida are the most popular state for fulltime RVers to claim as domiciles, so you might start your search there.

RE: Do I need "full time" insurance?

Do I need to get "full time" insurance from Progressive or somebody? For that matter, do I need to notify Progressive that I'm now living in it full time for my current "auto" insurance on it?
Most insurance companies consider you a fulltimer for insurance purposes if you live in your RV at least 5 months each year...even if you own a home and have homeowners insurance.
I agree with those who recommend you call Progressive, tell them your situation, and ask them. There's no use asking us because all we can do is give you some educated guesses...Progressive's answer is going to be the overriding one.

RE: Full time utilities costs

Electric: $348 About the only time you'll pay for your own electricity is when you're staying for a month or more. This summer, we paid $46 for electricity for a month in Sutherlin, Oregon. Right now, we're at an RV park in Quartzsite and we've run our A/C almost every day, so I know we'll pay more than the $46 we did in Oregon, but I'm sure it won't come anywhere close to $348!!!
Cable TV: $68 We pay DirecTV around $67 per month...this includes 8 channels of DNS plus one national feed of PBS.
Telephone $39 We have a Net10 pay-as-you-go phone that costs us around $15 per month.
Internet $40 We have a Spring air card that we pay around $65 per month for.
Garbage $39 Free.
Water $0 The ONLY time we've paid for water is if we have to go someplace to fill the fresh water tank up (and, even then, I think we've only had to pay one time for water...we've never stayed at an RV park that charged for water).
Please also indicate if you have solar panels and their wattage, if you use your washer/drier if you have one on board and if you have dual pane windows. 4 100-watt panels. We do have a washer & dryer (which we ONLY use when at a full hookup RV park). We have dual pane windows.

RE: Changing Banks when changing residency

If your banks are national banks, I wouldn't worry about making the change to a new bank...just change the address with your current banks.
We "bank" with Fidelity Investments and have had the account long before we started fulltiming and didn't make any changes (other than address change) when we went fulltiming.

RE: VEGAS TO QUARTZITE FOR THE WIENERS

At 1:47 PM today in Quartzsite, our outdoor thermometer says 85 degrees. It's probably still a bit warm for boondocking, but if you have hookups, it's fine.
As for favorite places to eat in Q, our two favorites are Taco Mio and Silly Al's. Also good are Mountain Quail Cafe, Grubstake, La Casa del Ranchero, and Palo Verde Cafe. We're not big fans of Sweet Darlene's, although they seem to have a loyal following. Stagecoach is permanently closed down, and Best Chinese is now a Mexican food restaurant.
Others are correct that there is nothing going on in Q right now...some of the vendors are only in the beginning stages of setting up but are not yet open. Of course, the Main Event, which is open all year long is open. By the end of this month, some vendors will be open with more and more opening up during November and December.

RE: How many recharge with solar?

We do a lot of boondocking/dry camping and solar was the first thing we added after getting our rig.
We have 4 100-watt solar panels (www.amsolar.com), 4 AGM batteries, an HPV22B solar controller, and a 2000-watt Prosine (true sine wave) inverter/charger. With this setup, we can run everything just as though we were hooked up to electricity at an RV park with the exception of A/C (we didn't have the microwave included in the whole-house inverter setup because we rarely use the MW for more than an extra storage cabinet). We do have 2 Honda 2000's for those times when we need A/C during the day (if it's hot enough to need A/C during the night, we'll move to an RV park with hookups) and should we want to use the MW.
We rarely turn on our generators, though, unless we need A/C (and we've only done that twice). If it's been sunny during the day, we have enough reserve battery power to be able to watch TV at night and still haven't brought the batteries down to below 12.5.

RE: Boon-docking Nevada in October

If you'll be coming down US-93, here are some possibilities:
1. Approximately 50 miles south of Wells, on the west side of US-93, there is a large gravel pit located about 1/4 mile off the road...we stayed there this spring and had a great view of the snow-covered Ruby Mountains!
N 40° 28.007' / W 114° 53.529'
2. Pioche City Park. Free (donations accepted), 10 sites with water and sewer. Across the street from the pool which has showers and toilets.
N 37° 56.283' / W 114° 27.111'
3. Echo Canyon State Park. $10 per night. Most sites have water available and there is a dump on site (although it was still closed for the season when we were there this past April).
N 37° 54.663' / W 114° 16.153'
4. Cathedral Gorge State Park. $14 per night. Just north of Panaca.
N 37° 49.274' / W 114° 24.964'

RE: What do snowbirds do about mail while they're gone?

I already answered this and suggested the free USPS service. We arrived today - and mail was in our box. We started the forwarding 10/2. And, here it is. Even got a magazine.
Yes, but the USPS is only obligated to forward magazines for 2 months...after that they're returned to the publisher.

RE: What do snowbirds do about mail while they're gone?

Good Heavens - what a lot of whining about $12 a month for mail forwarding.
As someone else pointed out, the USPS Premium Forwarding Service is not $12 PER MONTH!!! Here is a quote from the USPS website:
"Enrollment fee is just $10.00 and weekly reshipment fees are $11.95."
That'd be closer to $48 per month, or approximately $311 for a 6 month stay.
AND, the USPS will only ship to ONE address, not multiple, so this isn't a good solution if you plan on moving around during whatever period of time you're planning on being gone from home.

RE: What do You DO to get ready for full-timing?

Do you sell your house and just live in your RV ? That's what we did.
Do you have children or grandchildren ? Yes.
What about family and friends ? What about them?
Do you work as host in parks ? We were camp host for 3 months one summer at a small BLM campground, and we volunteered for a National Wildlife Refuge for 3 months another summer. We haven't done any volunteering for the past couple of years because we've been too busy traveling.
What happens when you are unable to travel because of health ? For short term illnesses, we'd just hunker down someplace. When the time comes that we can't travel because of failing health, we'll stay on our lot at one of the SKP parks.
What is something happens to one of you ? Well, the one left may continue to travel solo or settle on our lot.
But what about the Holidays ?What about them? Since most of our relatives live in the north where it gets cold, we don't visit them over Thanksgiving and Christmas. But, then, we've lived all over the country and never near our relatives, so that isn't anything new for us.
Do you just drop in and visit the kids once in awhile ? Yes...once in a while.
Do you have a place you pick up your mail ? ? ? Yes. We use a mail forwarding service (as do the majority of fulltimers). We simply contact them when we want mail sent and tell them where to send it.
